Doodson Sport Cup action review

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Challenge Cup

There were a handful of Doodson Cup ties played this week, including five second round matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Two first round ties saw Evo-Stik NPL First Division North's basement side Garforth Town go out at home to Evo-Stik NPL First Division South side Sheffield FC 2-1, with Vill Powell notching both for Club after Brett Mbalanda had given the hosts an 11th minute lead.

Not too far away at Ingfield, Garforth's league rivals Ossett Town ousted Evo-Stik NPL First Division South Belper Town 3-1 after extra-time.

Karl Colley gave the Nailers a 15th minute lead that Shane Kelsey cancelled out on the half-hour mark. Goals from James Eyles and Kelsey again in overtime settled the tie in the home side's favour.

In the second round, Market Drayton Town won the all-First Division South encounter in Shropshire against Sutton Coldfield Town, courtesy of a 29th minute Ryan Connor effort.

In another all-South tie, it took extra-time to settle it as Mickleover Sports edged out high-flying, but managerless Stamford AFC, by the odd goal in seven.

Alex Steadman and Nick Woods gave Sports the lead which Ricky Miller equalised on both occasions. Jake Gibson then put the visitors in front after 67 minutes, only for Steadman to grab a last-gasp leveller to take the game into an extra 30 minutes. Martin Smyth's 100th minute effort won it for Sports.

Warrington Town found themselves 2-0 up at Trafford in their all-First Division North tie, thanks to goals from Phil Mooney on the hour-mark and Ashley Ruane six minutes later. But the powerful home attack responded with three goals in the final 15 minutes from Shelton Payne, Martyn Andrews and Nia Bayunu.

Another all-North tie saw Farsley FC ease through 4-1 against Clitheroe, with goals from Gareth Grant after 22 minutes and then a Steve Mallory penalty. Ross Daly and Adam Priestley finished it after Ollie Devaney had equalised in the 61st minute.

South beat North at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds where Rainworth Miners Welfare beat struggling Goole AFC 4-0 with goals from Ashley Kitchen and Ryan Goward in the first half and a Conor Higginson brace in the second.
