Double delight for juniors

Grantham Town's U16s completed their double winning campaign with a penalty shoot-out win over St Patricks to win the Junior Premier League Intermediate Cup.

The junior Gingerbreads beat their Leicester-based opponents at Rugby Town on Saturday in their league cup competition after the sides were still deadlocked at 2-2 after extra-time.

The victory followed a 2-0 win in the Lincolnshire County Cup by Eddie Humphreys' youngsters two weeks ago against Birchwood at Lincoln City's Sincil Bank.

Grantham had to win it the hard way at the weekend after taking a two goal advantage into the break, Carter Cotterill converting a Jordan Richards cross to put Grantham ahead after just six minutes before Niall Davie bent a 25 yard free kick around the wall and into the top corner on the half hour mark.

St Patricks stormed back after the break with two early goals to force extra-time and the shoot-out. Grantham held their nerve to put away all their penalties - Davie, Richards, Tom Scott and Jake Hardy - all making no mistake with keeper Jack Nason producing two fine saves to play his part in the triumph.

A Grantham spokesman congratulated the youngsters and revealed that the win is also set to serve as a fitting send-off for one of the side's stars, Jordan Richards.

The spokesman said: "It was a fitting end to a great season for the lads and it was also fitting that the cup was lifted by Jordan Richards who was playing his last game before penning a two year deal with Notts County this week."
