Early exit by flying winger

Former FC United of Manchester winger Carlos Roca is set to hang up his playing boots after leaving Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Chorley on Friday.

Magpies manager Garry Flitcroft said the midfielder left by 'mutual consent' following his switch from Premier Division rivals FCUM in the summer and is now looking to focus on his coaching career.

Flitcroft said big things had been expected of the 28-year-old former Oldham Athletic, Carlisle, Northwich Victoria, Droylsden and Altrincham star when he arrived, pictured, but revealed that after a heart-to-heart over his loss of form, they had decided to part company.

The Magpies manager said: "During the summer Carlos arrived at the club and never gave less than 100 per cent in training, training as hard as any other member of the squad. However, he has struggled to recapture his form and pace in the matches we’ve played.

"We’ve sat down and discussed the situation. Carlos has been honest and realised he was struggling and has decided to retire from playing to concentrate on his coaching. I wish him all the best in the future."

Roca's departure ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend programme was followed by the arrival of new midfielder at Victory Park in the shape of Stockport County’s Alex Meaney.

The 20-year-old is former England U19 and a product of the Myerscough Academy. He had a brief stint in the Evo-Stik NPL last season while on a month's loan at Nantwich Town.
