Evans proud of Trophy shock

Romulus update, by Andy Mitchell.

ROMULUS boss Richard Evans was beaming with pride this week after his side pulled off the shock of the round in the FA Trophy, beating Leamington 1-0.

Evans hailed the Roms' work rate as they tore up the form book, easing past the Brakes who are pushing for promotion in the division above.

"It was a real team effort on Saturday - everyone played to the levels we know they can and did what was expected of them.

"To be honest it was as comfortable as we've been in any game this season, which is a real testament to the lads with the quality Leamington possess.

"In the end, with the chances we had we were disappointed not to have scored more goals - if anything the final scoreline flattered them [Leamington] a bit.

"Their 'keeper has pulled off several good saves from one-on-ones, while Chris Jay has only really had one save to make."

The victory has set up another tough tie for the Coles Lane outfit, travelling to Evostik NPL Division One South leaders Sheffield on 5th November. However, should Romulus upset the odds again, it would be their best ever run in the FA Trophy.

Meanwhile, Evans' charges return to league action when they take their good form to reformed Ilkeston FC this weekend.

The Robins lie second in the division, and Evans admitted it will be a tough test: "Ilkeston are right up at the top and it will be a hard game - we don't know too much about them, but they are a big club at this level and they have an experienced squad.

"We will go there full of confidence and play our own game as we always do - there should be a good crowd which always motivates our lads."

Evans will be without Wayne Dyer, who is still suffering with a hamstring strain, while Todd Evans is suspended.

Meanwhile, midfielder Jon Powis looks set to leave Romulus and join big-spending Daventry Town.

Town served seven days notice for Aston Villa fan Powis, who could link up with two former heroes at Browns Road with Lee Hendrie playing and Mark Kinsella managing the Southern League Central Division club.

*ROMS boss Richard Evans has lent his support to a memorial game at Stourbridge FC this weekend.

Ex-Kidderminster legend Chris Jones lost his battle with cancer at the age of 56 and his former team mates will line up on Sunday (30 Oct, KO 2.30pm) to raise money for the Compton Hospice, who cared for Chris in his last days.

Evans said: "It would be great if Romulus, Sutton and Boldmere fans could support this event as Chris was well loved and respected in the game."
