The director and operations manager at Marston Road resigned on Thursday for personal reasons but may still be involved in other roles.
Rangers say the regret the decision of Cater who is the father of Boro striker George Cater and earlier this month struck a deal with brewers Carlsberg to give the EVO-STIK NPL Premier Division club's ground a makeover.
Stafford Rangers chairman John Bromley, pictured right alongside Cater, said: “I would like to thank Gary for his very significant contribution to the club in his short time as a director.
"He has found it increasingly difficult to cope with the conflicts which come from being both a director and a father of one of the players, which the rest of the board sympathise with.
"I very much hope that he will stay in close touch with the board and he has indicated that he would be happy to take on specific projects if we ask him to.”
