Fans dig deep for striker's sister

After hearing how Birchwood-based firefighter and mum of two Vicki Griffiths has been left unable to move from the waist down after an accident at the gym, spectators dug deep during their 3-2 win over Chester at Moss Lane to help the EVO-STIK League newboys donate £500.

Pictured with her younger brother, friends, family and Vicki's colleagues at the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are fundraising to finance an extensive programme of essential home and car adaptations to accommodate her needs and enable her to look after her two children.

Proud Atrincham officials say supporters raised £442 during a series of bucket collections at last Tuesday night's friendly, a figure topped up to £500 following a personal donation of £78 from Robins chairman Grahame Rowley.

Former AFC Telford, Chester, Droylsden, Hednesford, Warrington and Nantwich Town striker Peers, 21, sent his thanks to supporters after the fixture, tweeting: "A massive thank you to both altrinchamfc and @chesterfc for helping to raise money at the game."

Altrincham's press and media officer John Edwards said: "The campaign to raise funds for the sister of Altrincham forward Tom Peers has benefited to the tune of £500, following a bucket collection at last Tuesday's friendly against Chester at The J.Davidson Stadium.

"It was reported here on the club's website before the game how Alty officials had readily granted a request for a collection. Volunteers duly patrolled the terraces and stands and raised the grand total of £422, a highly-impressive sum that was boosted to £500 by a personal donation of £78 from chairman Grahame Rowley."

Chester director Neil Bellis is closely associated with the drive to raise funds for the campaign in his capacity as communications officer at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

He added: "Thanks very much to everyone at Alty who made us feel very welcome and were very generous! It was great to raise so much, and we are very grateful. Best of luck for the season."
