Fighting boss beaten by cuts, not points

Goole AFC

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Goole AFC have parted company with manager Curtis Woodhouse.

The Vikings issued a short statement on Monday night announcing the 34-year-old's departure from the Victoria Pleasure Grounds after nearly a year at the helm.

Woodhouse replaced David Holdsworth in January 2014 after stepping up from assistant manager and officials said the continuing pressure on finances since former owner Baron Bloom left the First Division South Vikings earlier in the season were to blame for their manager's exit.

No announcement was made on a successor for the footballer turned professional boxer, pictured, but officials say fans can expect more news on Tuesday.

The club said: "Goole AFC can announce today that following a meeting with committee members, Curtis Woodhouse has left his post as club manager by mutual agreement.

"Both the club and Curtis agreed amicably to part company. This followed lengthy discussions based on the financial health of the club and the need to reduce the wage bill which would impact on team selections.

"Recent weeks have been very difficult for the club following the resignation of our former chairman and there is a need to ensure the club can continue to operate.

"The club wishes to place on record its sincere thanks to Curtis for his service and dedication and we all wish him well for the future. A further statement will be announced in due course."

Former Sheffield United midfielder Woodhouse went on to play for Birmingham City, Peterborough United, Hull City, Grimsby Town, Rushden & Diamonds, Mansfield Town, Harrogate Town, Eastwood Town and Sheffield FC before moving into management at the latter and famously becoming a professional boxer.

A light-welterweight, his record in the ring stands at 22 wins, 13 by knock-out, and seven defeats.
