Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Sheffield FC are hailing the appointment of Mick Wadsworth as their new manager as a major 'coup'.

Wadsworth, pictured after taking the helm at the world’s oldest football club on Tuesday, worked under Sir Bobby Robson with England and at Newcastle in the Premier League with the late footballing knight.

Barnsley-born Wadsworth, 63, takes the reins from Ian Whitehorne and will be assisted by Jordan Broadbent. His last post was with Sheffield United where he worked with manager Chris Morgan ahead of the appointment of Nigel Clough.

The former Huddersfield Town and Hartlepool United manager brings vast experience across all levels of the game. He has also managed or was number two at a number of other clubs including Carlisle, Norwich, Scarborough, Colchester, Southampton, Oldham, Huddersfield, Shrewsbury, Gretna and Chester City.

Wadsworth, who has managed overseas, also enjoyed an eight-year spell with the Football Association fulfilling a number of senior posts and Sheffield FC director Bob Dyson said: "We have been in discussions with Mick for some time – we are delighted that he has accepted our offer. It is a fantastic coup for us.

"He was impressed by our plans to move forward including our youth programmes, building on our community projects with the schools, colleges and universities in the region and our relationships with the local professional football clubs."

Wadsworth, who played in the Football League with Scunthorpe before turning out for Gainsborough Trinity, Mossley and Frickley Athletic, is looking forward to getting down to work following his appointment at the Dronfield, North Derbyshire-based club.

Wadsworth said: "I am delighted to be joining Club. It is a great set-up with ambitious plans to move up the football pyramid. I cannot wait to get started and make a difference."
