Fundraising for the nation's fallen

Grantham Town will be raising funds for the British Legion's 2016 Poppy Appeal on Saturday before they join the rest of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League clubs in holding a minute's silence for the nation's war dead.

As well as leading out the players and match officials for their Buildbase UK FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round match against Matlock Town, Grantham’s branch of the Royal British Legion are stetting up stalls at the Meres for fans to buy poppies and a vast array of Poppy Appeal gifts.

To mark Armistice Day on Friday 11 November and Remembrance Sunday this weekend, clubs and fans are planning numerous events to pay their respects to the British and Commonwealth servicemen and women who've died in conflicts to secure and protect the nation's freedom.

Last year, the Grantham area alone sent almost £39,000 to the British Legion's headquarters to help care for veterans and their families.

Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, the nearest to 11 November, Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War at 11am on November 11 1918.

Two minutes' silence is held at 11am before the laying of wreaths at war memorials around the country, the silence representing the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when the guns fell silent.

Her Majesty The Queen is pictured laying her wreath at The National Service of Remembrance at The Cenotaph in Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday.
