Fundraising won't stop for teen hero

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Chasetown will continue to raise funds for charity in memory of teenage cancer fundraiser Stephen Sutton.

The Scholars paid tribute to the terminally ill teenager earlier this month before his death last week after a final ‘thumbs-up’ picture he posted on Facebook, pictured, sparked a £4 million plus flood of donations from around the globe.

His funeral took place on Friday after a two day vigil at Lichfield Cathedral. More than 11,000 people filed past his coffin to pay their respects after his spirit and bravery attracted worldwide headlines.

Officials at the First Division South club got to know the 19-year-old well after holding two charity matches and a number of other events to raise funds for his chosen charity, The Teenage Cancer Trust.

The original match in May 2013 – between the club’s FA Cup heroes from 2005 against Oldham and Cardiff heroes of 2008 - was staged to help him fulfill his bucket list aspirations and reach his originally modest fundraising target of £10,000. Nearly 500 fans turned out this April for a second match between a Chasetown Old Boys XI and a West Bromwich Albion All Star side to raise a further £3,000 plus.

Chasetown’s press officer Paul Mullins said: "We had the pleasure of working alongside Stephen throughout the planning of the charity day and his enthusiasm for life was infectious. There's no question we'll do something and will probably continue to do things."
