Gainsborough Trinity make statement signings

Gainsborough Trinity have bolstered their ranks ahead of the 2023/24 season with the double signing of left-back Lewis Butroid and experienced forward Dayle Southwell.

Local lad Butroid arrives at the Northolme following his departure from National League North side Farsley Celtic, having helped them retain their Step 2 status.

The 24-year-old had previously progressed through the youth ranks at Scunthorpe United before signing a professional contract with the club, making his league debut against Portsmouth in January 2017.

He also enjoyed a short spell with Worksop Town, prior to linking up with Farsley.

"I am buzzing to be back really," he said. "Last time I signed was all a bit rushed - I’d just had Covid and not done any pre-season training so felt like I was playing catch up for the first few months.

"It wasn’t until I left I finally felt fully fit that season, but this time feels like I’ve got my career and performances going in the right direction, and that matches how the club have got on since the start of last season.

"It feels like a perfect fit for me to come back. Hopefully now, I can help get the club back to where I used to watch them when I was younger, in the National League North."

Joining Butroid at the Holy Blues is former Alfreton Town forward Southwell.

The 29-year-old will help plug the gap in the final third caused by the departure of last season's top scorer Clayton Donaldson in recent days.

"The ambition of the club is great and the style of football they explained is exactly what I’m looking for," Southwell said following the move.

"I will look to bring energy up front along with hopefully goals and all-round play. Not just on the pitch but off the pitch, hopefully adding more experience to the side and be a voice on and off the field."

Trinity boss Neal Bishop admitted his delight at being able to attract two players of such quality, who played their football in the league above during the previous campaign.

"I am delighted to get Lewis back to the club. Towards the end of the season, drawing up targets, he was one of the top four, five names on the list, and to get him through the door this early is fantastic.

"I think he improves us on last season and for him, a local lad – that’s a bonus, he's a very good footballer who is technically very gifted.

"Obviously, Dayle is a fantastic signing, probably a statement signing. To be honest, I didn't think we would be able to get him through the door. I knew about his qualities, as everyone did.

"He was a fantastic player in the division above. He played a lot of games for Alfreton who finished at the top end of that division, so I am really surprised that we were able to get him."
