Gladiators raise £5k at Sportsman's Dinner

Event held at new sports and social club for first time.

Matlock Town FC raised over £5,000 from the first sportsman’s dinner held at their new sports and social club.

BBC Radio’s Test Match Special commentator Jonathan Agnew delivered the after-dinner speech and comedy was provided by Dave Wolfe.

Items auctioned on the night included the chance to play snooker with green baize legend Jimmy White.

Home and away shirts signed by Ross Hannah, who scored a club-record 52 goals for the Gladiators last season, were bought by Brian Startin and then generously donated to the club to be displayed in the boardroom.

“I was delighted with how the night went,” said chairman Tom Wright. “It was a resounding success.

“It was our 37th sportsman’s dinner, but the first one at our new sports and social club. Derbyshire Caterers did a great job in serving up a three-course meal to around 160 people and I’m sure everyone had an enjoyable night.”

The sports and social club at Matlock’s Causeway Lane ground regularly hosts entertainment and is available for private functions, meetings and seminars. Phone 01629 55362 / 583866 or email info@matlocktownfc.co.uk for further details.
