Goodwin named as new boss

Scott Goodwin was named as the new manager of Gresley on Saturday after the former Coventry City midfielder watched his new charges hold Sheffield FC to a 0-0 draw in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League.

Goodwin, who also played for Hereford, Hednesford, Tamworth, Kettering, Gravesend & Northfleet and Canvey Island, was appointed as the First Division South club's new manager three weeks after the departure of Wayne Thornhill.

The 37-year-old, who kicked off his managerial career at Rothwell Corinthians and Burton Park Wanderers before managing United Counties Premier Division Irchester United and Long Buckby, will take charge of the Moatmen for the first time next Saturday at Belper Town.

Skipper and assistant manager Jamie Barrett, along with recently signed veteran striker Gary Ricketts, have been appointed as Goodwin's assistant managers before he officially takes over from caretaker Dave Langston at training on Tuesday night.

In a statement released by the club, officials invited supporters to his unveiling. A spokesman said: "There will be an open training session at the Moat Ground on Tuesday evening starting at 7pm for supporters to come and meet Scott - everyone will be welcome. The club welcomes Scott to Gresley FC and looks forward to a successful future."

Former Rocester boss Langston held the fort Thornhill stood down as manager after the club's 3-0 home defeat to Shaw Lane Aquaforce last month. That reverse followed a stuttering start to the club's First Division South campaign that had seen the Moatmen win three games away from home but fail to register a point at home.
