Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Stafford Rangers hold a big eight-point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table following a 4-0 drubbing of second-bottom Rugby Town on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

A crowd of 562 at Marston Road saw Nathan Rooney bag a brace on 50 and 62 minutes, Ben Haseley score on 54 minutes and loanee George Cater in injury-time add the other.

Shaw Lane Aquaforce, Sheffield FC, Coalville Town and Newcastle Town are the other occupants of the top five.

Shaw Lane won 3-0 at Market Drayton Town, courtesy of Gavin Alott after 13 minutes, Jonathan Wafula after 42 minutes and Adam Jones eight minutes from time.

Sheffield were held to a goalless draw at Gresley FC, who were being watched by new manager Scott Goodwin, while Coalville were also held to a 1-1 draw at Owen Street by Leek Town, whose Niall Maguire cancelled out Aaron Hooton`s 21st minute opener just before the break.

Newcastle were 3-0 winners at Loughborough Dynamo where Tim Sanders on the half-hour mark, a Carl Sibson own goal six minutes later and Dereece Gardner on 63 minutes were on target.

Basford United won the derby at home against Belper Town by the same 3-0 scoreline, courtesy of a Ruben Wiggins-Thomas brace in the 42nd and 70th minutes after Blair Anderson had given his side a 10th minute lead.

Chasetown won 3-2 at Carlton Town in a weird game that saw the visiting Scholars lead 2-0 by the ninth minute through Ryan Wynter and Stanley Mugisha.

Danny Gordon reduced the arrears in the 73rd minute, only for Nick Turton to restore Chasetown`s two-goal cushion, but Romaine Graham made it 2-3 less than three minutes later.

Jake Newman scored the only goal after 24 minutes to earn Spalding United victory at Goole AFC while Daventry Town returned to winning ways in a 3-0 Communication Park victory over Romulus, with Joe Curtis in the opening half and then James Tricks and Barry Deacon in the second scoring.

Bottom-markers Tividale earned a 1-1 draw at Bracken Moor against Stocksbridge Park Steels, having led through veteran Mark Danks` 13th minute opener until nine minutes from the end when Rory Coleman equalised.

And it also finished all-square at Kidsgrove Athletic against Lincoln United, who led through Jordan Lemon on 15 minutes and Paul Grimes on 33 minutes only to be pegged back by Anthony Malbon for the hosts after 64 minutes and Nick Wellecomme 19 minutes from time.
