Heart attack fears for defender

By David Watters

Monday night's Integro League Cup clash between EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Brighouse Town and Shaw Lane AFC was abandoned after a player suffered a suspected heart attack and collapsed on the pitch.

The Preliminary Round fixture was suspended soon after 9pm with an hour played and the visitors leading 2-0 after Shaw Lane's Daniel Wilkinson fell to the floor and reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.

Signed from Rushall Olympic this summer, the 26-year-old former Scarborough Athletic defender was treated on the pitch at St Giles Road by medics for more than half an hour with CPR being administered before being rushed by ambulance to the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.

Worried club officials say his family have been informed and were on their way to the hospital to be by his bedside.

The thoughts and prayers of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League are with Daniel, his family and the club.
