Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

There are still five clubs with unbeaten records in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South after Saturday`s round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Witton Albion top the pile on goal difference, but Spalding United and Romulus both have four wins and a draw from their five matches, while Shaw Lane AFC and Gresley FC are also yet to taste defeat in 2016-17.

Witton dropped their first points of the campaign – at Coles Lane against Romulus, who took a first-minute lead through Mark Branch. Witton recovered their composure and equalised right on the stroke of half-time through Karl Noon.

Spalding were 2-1 home winners over Loughborough Dynamo, who led through Louis Keenan`s goal on the half-hour mark.

Bradley Wells equalised after 57 minutes and Cenk Acar won it for the Tulips five minutes from time.

Shaw Lane triumphed by the same scoreline at Harrison Park against previously unbeaten Leek Town.

Spencer Harris gave the visitors a 27th minute lead that Kieran Lugsden doubled just shy of the hour-mark, with Sam Grimshaw replying 12 minutes from time.

Gresley were held to a 2-2 draw at the Dog & Duck by switched AFC Rushden & Diamonds in front of the day`s biggest crowd of 402.

But the Moatmen let a 2-0 lead slip, given to them by Pearson Mwanyongo on 31 minutes and Courtney Meade on 53 minutes.

Nabil Shariff`s 65th minute penalty and the Ross Oulton after 73 minutes pulled Diamonds level, only for Mwanyongo to seemingly win it for the visitors three minutes into stoppage time. But seconds later a long-range free-kick from Oulton earned the home side parity.

Witton top the table after being switched from the First Division North but neighbours Northwich Victoria, who made the same switch in the summer, find themselves bottom and win-less after losing 1-0 at home to Market Drayton Town, whose Andre James scored on 67 minutes.

Vics are the only side in the division yet to record a win after Sheffield FC, Kidsgrove Athletic, Lincoln United and Basford United all earned their first three-points of the new season on Saturday.

Club beat a Rugby Town side who have won only once themselves – Ben Partridge bagging a brace and Alex Denton and Andrew Ofosu singles, cancelling out David Kolodynski and a Lee Cooksey own goal for Valley.

Kidsgrove went nap at home to Chasetown, with new signing Dan Turner helping himself to two on debut. Harry Clayton, Tom Morris and Ashley Hodgkinson were the other Grove marksmen.

Lincoln edged out Bedworth United 2-1 at Ashby Avenue with goals from Jack McGovern in the 52nd and 87th minutes – all after Jordan Archer had given the Greenbacks the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Fancied Basford edged Stocksbridge Park Steels out by the odd goal in five, coming back from a seventh minute Jake Sheridan own goal to win - but they left it late.

Ben Hutchinson equalised 10 minutes later but Kuda Muske`s 65th minute effort restored the visitors lead, only for Ashley Grayson and Mason Rowley to win it for the Nottingham side in the final three minutes.

A penalty from Alex Steadman in first half stoppage time was enough to earn Belper Town a 1-0 win at Carlton Town, while Newcastle Town won 2-1 at home to Stamford AFC.

Jon Beaumont`s 27th minute goal saw Castle lead until five minutes into the second half when Sam Mulready equalised. Jacob Lovatt won it for the home side 10 minutes from time.
