Kelly taking the lead for good cause

Hyde United manager Darren Kelly is sure to be joining his players on training runs over the coming weeks after vowing to complete a gruelling charity challenge.

The Tigers boss, pictured, is running in the Plusnet York Marathon on Sunday 8 October and doing the '100 miles a month' challenge in aid of York in Recovery, a project being delivered by nationwide charity Changing Lives to fight the scourge of drug and alcohol addiction.

In a heartfelt post on his JustGiving fundraising page to raise £2,000, Kelly explains why the cause is close to his family's heart, his brother-in-law's struggles with addiction throughout his short life before being murdered by drug dealers.

After praising him as a "funny, intelligent and larger than life" character, he tells supporters: "My brother-in-law James struggled with addictions throughout his short life. Although addiction was not the direct cause of his death; it was the dark, unforgiving and violent world of drug addiction which led to his untimely death. He was taken from us far too soon, murdered by drug dealers for a drug debt.

"Changing Lives is a national, registered charity which provides specialist support for thousands of vulnerable people and their families, every month. Through pioneering and innovative work they support people to make positive, lasting changes in their lives. Their aim is to help people to stop the cycle of addiction."

Based in the North East and established 45 years ago, the Changing Lives community of charities work with over 16,000 vulnerable adults every year, providing specialist support to help people make positive, lasting changes to their lives.
