Long-serving Morpeth Town midfielder departs

Morpeth Town have announced the departure of long-serving midfielder Ben Sayer after almost a decade at the club.

Sayer first joined the Highwaymen in 2014 and has since played a starring role in their rise up the non-league pyramid.

He was named Northern League Player of the Year in 2017 and leaves with Morpeth sat 10th in the Northern Premier League.

Starting out in Newcastle United's reserves, Sayer was released in 2012 and has since featured for National League North duo Blyth Spartans and Spennymoor Town during his time in the game.

Sayer has been restricted to just five appearances for Morpeth this season, and was also sent out on loan to North Shields.

In a statement posted on social media, Morpeth Town said: "We can confirm that Ben Sayer has left the club after having his contract cancelled.

"A major part of our rise through the divisions, Ben ends a 326-appearance stay, with 55 goals and MANY more assists!

"Best of luck for the next move, and thanks for the memories, Ben."
