Lost generation are coming home ...

Scarborough Athletic chairman Trevor Bull believes the EVO-STIK League's Seadogs are reconnecting with a 'lost generation' of fans after returning from a decade in exile.

Bull has seen gates triple this season as families and children flock to the new Flamingo Land Stadium to see Steve Kittrick's second-placed side in action and he hailed the surge in an interview to mark the six month anniversary of the club's first game back in the town against a Sheffield United XI on Saturday 15 July last year.

A crowd of 2,003 turned out to welcome the Seadogs home and Bull told the club's website on Monday that they were going from strength to strength with attendances still averaging over 1,000 and sponsorship and commercial activity also booming since they ended a 10 year stay in Bridlington.

The EVO-STIK League North club's best run in the FA Cup this season since hosting Premier League Chelsea in January 2004 across the road at their old McCain Stadium has kept the momentum going and Bull, pictured, said: "It feels like it’s gone really quickly, we didn’t know where the six months was going to take us, it’s taken us further than we probably expected and we’ve learnt a hell of a lot along the way.

"It's noticeable that going to watch the Boro on a Saturday is becoming a habit again, it’s a habit that people haven’t been in for ten years! Also, the number of parents I’ve got who say they’re annoyed with me because all of a sudden they’re having to stand on the terraces and watch because their children have been begging them to come is brilliant as well!

"I kept referring to the lost generation, and the number of children we’re seeing coming through the turnstiles and the number of shirts we’re selling in child sizes has gone through the roof. It’s not just the primary school children, there’s the teenagers who come along and make all the noise too!

According to Bull, coming home hasn't been all plain sailing and he added: "We’ve had issues like the way the ground is configured and the sightlines, and gradually we’re addressing those. We’re working very closely with Scarborough Borough Council on that and everyone has been very helpful to help us move that forwards.

"I think we’ve gone through phases over the last six months because we had all the excitement of pre-season, then the league kicking off with a 0-0 draw against Hyde. The big bonus for us was the FA Cup run because it got everyone excited and brought in a lot of additional revenue to support us this season.

"We couldn’t have got where we are today with the support of local businesses. Local businesses are really buying into what we’re trying to do, I think everyone now understand that we’re not just a football club but we’re a community club."
