Magpies turning into Canaries to back charity!

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Chorley should probably be known as the Canaries and not the Magpies on Saturday after agreeing to turn yellow in the name of charity.

Magpies keeper Sam Ashton, manager Garry Flitcroft, skipper Andy Teague and Andy Turner, MD of club sponsors Chorley Group, are pictured showing off the new strip they’ll be donning when Worksop arrive in the Premier Division at Victory Park.

As you’d expect, the Magpies normally play in their traditional black and white and are switching to yellow to raise awareness of Chorley MENCAP, a not-for-profit organisation that supports people with learning difficulties in the town.

After winning permission from the league to switch against the Tigers, title-chasing Chorley are also lining up a number of family-friendly attractions for the day as part of their drive to raise much-needed funds for the charity. Activities will include face-painting, a penalty shoot-out, and a giant inflatable slide.

Magpies Chairman Ken Wright said: "As part of our sponsorship agreement with the Chorley Group, we’ve committed to helping them raise awareness of the great work Chorley MENCAP does in the local community.

"Hopefully by wearing the yellow shirts it will help to raise Chorley MENCAP’s profile in the town. We are also planning to auction the shirts off before the end of the season, with all of the proceeds going to Chorley MENCAP."

The Chorley Group’s Turner, who is also Vice Chairman of Chorley MENCAP, said: "This is a magnificent gesture by Chorley FC and we can’t thank them enough for their support. The football club is at the very heart of the local community and it’s great to see they are firmly committed to supporting local causes."

He added: "The Worksop game is sure to attract a bumper crowd with both sides gunning for promotion so it’s a great platform to raise awareness of Chorley MENCAP.”
