Marine seeking FA Cup heroes

Fundraiser plan as part of floodlight redevelopment.

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Marine are looking for members of a side which achieved one of the club's greatest FA Cup successes to come to a fundraising dinner and hear the man who scored two goals on the day.

Gerry Glover who played for Everton before joining Marine is a speaker at the fundraising dinner at the club on Thursday, November 17th along with another ex-Mariner and former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland star Jason McAteer.

Gerry scored the third goal on November 22nd 1975 when Marine recorded their first ever FA Cup win over a football league side beating Barnsley at home 3-1. The team on that day was Terry Crosbie, Ray Pritchard, Tony Hammill, Peter Smith, Wally Bennett, Colin Edwards, John Shergold, Steve Bennie, Gerry Glover, Andy Windsor and Bill Morrey, who scored the other goal. Marine went on to play Hartlepool United in the 2nd round going out in a replay away from home.

Marine chairman Paul Leary said: "It would be great if some of that team or supporters at that famous game came along to add their memories to Gerry's. That would make the evening very special for some of our supporters who remember that day well."

David Wotherspoon, author of the history of Marine, The Mighty Mariners, which describes the game in detail said:

"Sadly Ray Pritchard has passed away and I know Steve Bennie and Bill Morrey are in Australia, but it would be really great to hear from other members of that historic team."

The dinner is in aid of the club's appeal to replace the existing floodlights. Tickets cost £20 and more details or ticket enquiries can be obtained by contacting Paul Leary on 07855-275722 or the Clubrooms on 0151-924-1743
