Mariners answer call to arms!

By David Watters

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Marine have been called up to help recruit the nation's next generation of soldiers.

The proud Mariners announced on Tuesday that the Marine Travel Arena has been chosen by Bootle Army Reserve Centre for a matchday recruitment campaign over ten home games in 2016 after chairman Paul Leary and secretary Richard Cross met up at the ground with the recruitment officers of 238 Squadron, 156 Regiment.

Starting this Saturday when Sean Hessey's side host title-chasing Darlington in the EVO-STIK NPL's Premier Division, the agreement will see the unit manning a recruitment stand with army vehicles, recruitment banners, posters and literature on show around the stadium.

Mariners chairman Leary said: “Marine Football Club is really pleased with the result of discussions with officers from the local Army Reserve unit to use our stadium to recruit reservists.

"This is a pretty unique arrangement and is another example of Marine entering into a mutually beneficial partnership that has a real positive outcome for all involved."

He added: "I look forward to working with the local Army Reserve personnel and assisting them with their local recruitment objectives.”

WO2 Alan Day, 238 Squadron Army Reserve recruitment officer, said: “238 Squadron RLC are delighted that Marine are supporting our most recent recruiting campaign.

"We look forward to being able to work closely with the football club and extend our thanks to the chairman, secretary and members of Marine for giving us this unique opportunity which will enable Army Reserve soldiers from the local area to engage with potential applicants and the wider community of Sefton, enabling us to highlight the work of the local Army reserve unit.”
