Mariners lend a hand in the community

South Shields have been using their spare time to help their local community, with players and staff volunteering at a food bank.

The club recently announced via social media that they were looking to help food banks in South Tyneside, with an approach quickly made by Key 2 Life Food Bank, which is based at Boldon Lane Library in South Shields.

Key 2 Life is the longest-running food bank in South Tyneside and plays a crucial part in helping some of the most vulnerable people in the area. Last year the food bank gave out over 4,000 parcels.

One of the members that volunteered was South Shields captain, Jon Shaw.

“We want to help out where and whenever we can,” said Shaw.

“The supporters and the region have done so much to help our club grow that whenever there’s an opportunity for us to help out we can and should.

“The club and area have so many unsung heroes and mostly on a voluntary basis that it’s quite humbling and when chance comes, to go do things like the food bank, we’ve got a great staff that will all jump in to help where they can.”
