McLuckie comes out of retirement

Experienced defender Phil McLuckie was set to return to action in the EVO-STIK League with Workington on Saturday a year after hanging up his playing boots.

McLuckie, pictured, made 279 starts for the Reds, a further 66 appearances as a substitute and scored 30 goals before announcing his retirement in October 2016.

Originally a right-back, he was expected to start against Sutton Coldfield Town at Borough Park in the EVO-STIK Lague's top flight after returning this week in time to play in Thursday night's 5-2 Cumberland Senior Cup win over Whitehaven.

The Reds say joint managers David Hewson and Lee Andrews moved quickly to plug the gaps in their squad by signing the 28-year-old who retired after a run of persistent injuries and increasing work commitments.

Hewson told fans he delighted with the return of the versatile McLuckie who's signed until the end of the season after playing in a number of positions during his ten previous campaigns with the Cumbrians.

The Reds boss told the club's website: “A fit and focussed Phil McLuckie would be an asset to any squad in this league and it won’t take him too long before he is up and running and ready for action. His working week has changed recently which will allow him to train on a regular basis.”
