Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

There's a three-way tie at the top of the EVO-STIK League Premier Division's table after Altrincham, Shaw Lane AFC and Warrington Town all drew on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Relegated Altrincham lead the way on goal difference after sharing a goalless draw with Warrington in atrocious conditions at Cantilver Park. It was a shame for the 952 crowd, most of whom ended up being very wet undeed!

Shaw Lane were also held to a draw but it was a 3-3 thriller in almost as bad conditions at Ashton United`s Hurst Cross.

Alex Johnson gave the hosts a 16th minute lead that Liam Tomsett doubled four minutes later. Paul Clayton reduced the arrears less than a minute later and a Simon Woodford own goal pulled the Yorkshire visitors level on 32 minutes.

And then Spencer Harris took Shaw Lane into the break in front with a 43rd minute third. That looked to be the winner as conditions worsened but Matty Chadwick popped up with Ashton`s equaliser in the 89th minute.

Fourth-placed Farsley Celtic were unable to make any inroads into the gap between them and Warrington after losing 3-0 at Throstle Nest to an impressive Mickleover Sports side.

Pablo Mills gave the visitors an early second minute lead – one they held until the 75th minute when Evan Garnett added a second. And four minutes later, Andy Dales confirmed the points were going back to Derbyshire with a third.

Grantham Town moved into fifth spot after a 2-0 win at the War Memorial Ground against a Stourbridge outfit who they leap-frogged in the table.

The Gingerbreads are becoming something of a bogey side for the Glassboys, who were beaten three times by them last season. On a wet and windy afternoon, the 600 souls who braved the weather had to wait until the 81st minute for the breakthrough goal, and it came from the visitors` Lee Shaw. And then right on the final whistle, Shaw doubled his and Grantham`s tally to confirm victory.

Workington AFC are level on points with Grantham in sixth after 4-0 win over bottom-markers Sutton Coldfield Town at Borough Park.

It was goalless at the break but within a minute of the second half starting, Sam Joel broke the deadlock to give the Reds the lead. Joel grabbed a second on 77 minutes and Jordan Holt added a third six minutes later, with Nathan Waterson making it 4-0 in the final minute.

Rushall Olympic are level on points with Sutton Coldfield as they fell 2-0 at Dales Lane to Marine AFC, who moved up to 20th in the table as a consequence of goals from Danny Mitchley from the penalty spot after seven minutes and a second for Liam Tongue just before the hour-mark.

Nantwich Town showed signs of recovery as they edged out Witton Albion by the odd goal in five at the Weaver Stadium.

A Rob Hopley own goal gave the Dabbers the bonus of an early second minute lead. Sean Cooke added a second for the home side nine minutes later, only for Hopley to score at the right end on the half-hour mark.

Matty Bell pulled the Dabbers 3-1 in front after 63 minutes, although they had to hang on after Paul Williams pulled a second back for Albion from the spot eight minutes from time.

Coalville Town made it a worrying sixth successive defeat and two games in a row when they have conceded five goals.

It was Buxton who became the latest side to go nap against the Ravens at Owen Street, despite the home side taking an early seventh minute lead through Dan Creaney.

Andy McWilliams equalised 11 minutes later and then Liam Hardy put the Bucks in front after 34 minutes. And an Anthony Wilson brace on 69 and 81 minutes and a second for Hardy in stoppage time made it 5-1.

Halesowen Town had a good 4-3 win against Lancaster City at The Grove.

But the Yeltz fans were made to sweat! Goals from Asa Charlton after 37 minutes and a John McAtee brace in the 48th and 57th minutes took the home side three-up. However, Steve Williams pulled one back in the 76th minute and then Melle Meulensteen – son of the former Manchester United assistant boss – scored a second for the Dolly Blues with 10 minutes remaining.

Serge Diop made it 4-2 as stoppage time ticked in before a second for Meulensteen in the second minute of time added had nerves tingling again.

Matlock Town survived the conditions and Stafford Rangers` challenge to win 2-0 at Causeway Lane.

Tyrell Waite gave the Gladiators a 13th minute lead that they eventually doubled 11 minutes into the second half through Shaun Harrad.

Stalybridge Celtic won 4-2 at Bower Fold against Barwell, for whom this was a third successive league and cup defeat.

Theo Bailey-Jones gave the hosts a 19th minute lead that Owen Story levelled right on the stroke of half-time. Oliver Roberts then restored Celtic`s lead five minutes after the break, only for Story to level again within four minutes. But Matty Wolfenden on 70 minutes and Jake Charles in stoppage time took the game away from the Canaries.

Elsewhere, John Campbell gave Whitby Town the lead on the half-hour mark at the Turnbull Ground in what turned out to be a 2-2 draw with Hednesford Town.

The Pitmen were back on level terms two minutes after half-time through Jordan Graham, only for Campbell – so prolific in the Northern League – to restore the Seasiders' lead six minutes later. However, Graham matched the home side`s marksman by bagging his second to earn a point in the 67th minute.
