Monday night's action review

By David Watters

Newly-promoted Shaw Lane AFC are finding the higher-level EVO-STIK League Premier tough and went down to a second successive defeat, this time a Monday night home defeat to Mickleover Sports, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

It was the visitors, who opened up with a draw at the weekend, who grabbed the lead just past the half-hour mark through Evan Garnett. However, right on half-time, experienced striker Paul Clayton pulled the Ducks back on level terms.

And the home side looked to be in the ascendancy when, on 66 minutes, former Duck Jake Scott was shown a straight red card for an alleged stamping incident off the ball. But it was the ten-men who went on to win the game with a 77th minute Bradley Grayson effort.

Another newly-promoted side, North West Counties League champions Atherton Collieries, attracted a good crowd of 355 for their homecoming in EVO-STIK League North against Kendal Town.

The Colls had won their opener at Colne on Saturday but were frustrated by a well-organised Mintcakes outfit and a 0-0 draw was about right on the night, earning the Cumbrians their first point.

There were two matches in the EVO-STIK League South on Monday night too, Romulus getting off the `nil-point` mark as they shared a goalless Coles Lane draw with a Market Drayton Town side who had also drawn on the opening day.

Basford United made it two wins from their opening two matches by beating a Stocksbridge Park Steels outfit who have yet to register a point.

It took half-an-hour for the Nottinghamshire side to breakthrough when a long kick from keeper Saul Deeney caught Steels out and Ben Hutchinson crossed for Kieran Wells to head home. And two minutes before half-time, the hosts doubled their advantage with Hutchinson again the provider, this time his corner was headed in by Wells.

The visitors got themselves back into the game after 74 minutes when Brodie Litchfield converted a penalty. But eight minutes later it was all over when experienced striker Liam Hearn came off the bench to slot home number three from close range.
