Curzon Ashton moved into eighth place in the Evo-Stik Northern Premeir League First Division North table on Monday night but had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Prescot Cables at the Tameside Stadium, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Curzon’s home form had been excellent over the last couple of years but a 70th minute wonder strike from Callum Hoctor looked set to inflict their first home defeat in a regular game for two years.

Curzon dominated the first half but against the run of play, Jack Webb opening the scoring for Cables in the 42nd minute with a fine curling effort. But immediately after the restart Curzon levelled things up, courtesy of Tony Evans’ precise finish.

Curzon finished the half strongly, only the crossbar prevented Evans from grabbing his second and putting Curzon in the lead. Prescot went in front again though after 71 minutes when left-back Callum Hoctor – a recent signing from Curzon's neighbours Ashton United - got forward again and unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard drive into the top corner.

But Evans has a habit of rescuing Curzon at the most crucial moments and he did it yet again with an equaliser in the 88th minute. Then, in stoppage time, Kristian Dennis thought he had popped up with a late winner for the hosts, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
