Monday's First Division North review

By David Watters

Droylsden sit on top of the early EVO-STIK League North table following a best-of-five-goals win across the Pennines at Brighouse Town on Monday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Bloods, who have endured a miserable last few seasons, fell behind after just nine minutes when a mix up between keeper Richie Branagan and Danny Hall let it Ernest Boafo. On 26 minutes, the visitors were awarded a penalty when Liam Caddick was bundled over in the box but Ciaran Kilheeney’s spot-kick was well saved by Town `keeper Harry Stead.

However, Droylsden levelled on 36 minutes when a ball through the middle found Caddick who finished well before they took the lead just before the hour-mark through Dom Smith. Brighouse levelled six minutes later after another defensive mix-up, Adam Shaw taking advantage.

The scores were level for only two minutes through as hesitancy, this time in the home defence, let in Kilheeney to make amends for his earlier penalty miss and score what proved to be the winner.

Newcomers Atherton Collieries shared a Lancastrian derby draw at Alder Street against Banber Bridge.

In front of a crowd of 253, Colls were rocked when they had Josh Messer sent-off after only 25 minutes for a rash challenge on Brad Carsley. Danny Forbes then gave Brig the lead after 35 minutes when he fired home at the far post following a corner.

Ben Hardcastle came close to equalising for the ten-men minutes before the break when his 25-yarder bounced back off the crossbar. The battling hosts finally found a leveller on 72 minutes when they made a swift breakaway and Hardcastle netted from 10 yards to deservedly earn a point after playing with ten men for three quarters of the game.
