Curzon Ashton returned to second place in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division table on Monday night after a 2-1 win against second-bottom Witton Albion at the Tameside Stadium, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.
After a fast and furious start to the game, Witton took the lead through Josh Hancock after nine minutes
and could have pulled further ahead on 22 minutes but recent signing Jamie Rainford hit the side netting from 18 yards out.
Curzon hit back on 38 minutes with one of the best free-kicks seen at the Tameside Stadium in a while, skipper Sam Walker letting fly from 30 yards out with a left-footed strike that went straight over the wall and keeper Daniel East.
Witton should have been ahead again on 55 minutes when Danny Andrews found himself 12 yards out and unmarked and they were made to pay for his miss on 79 minutes when Niall Cummins was brought down in the box and Walker stepped up to score from the penalty spot.
