Monday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Workington AFC moved to within two points of leaders Blyth Spartans in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division on Monday night after a comprehensive 4-0 win against Hyde United at Ewen Fields, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Reds opened the scoring after 34 minutes when Kyle May met an in-swinging corner and found the back of the net. Ten minutes later the visitors doubled their advantage when James Earl picked up a loose ball and drilled the ball through keeper Sam Vince's legs.

And 10 minutes after half-time Workington killed the game off as a contest with a third goal. Joe McGee squared the ball across goal for Gareth Arnison to find the corner of the net. And a fourth arrived on 62 minutes when Conor Tinnion played the ball across the six-yard box for the sliding Phil McLuckie to guide the ball past Vince.

Workington have suffered defeat just once in the last ten matches and this was a fourth successive victory.

Monday`s other game saw Ilkeston FC`s top five hopes take a blow when they suffered a 2-0 defeat on their own New Manor Ground patch by a Frickley Athletic side who are now just a point and a place behind them in eleventh.

The visitors enjoyed most of the play and were a little unfortunate not to go in ahead at half-time. But Jacob Hazel headed the Blues in front on 52 minutes, steering a pin-point Tyler Williams cross just inside the near post. James Walshaw added the second from the penalty spot on 62 minutes after Tom Davie had been brought down.
