It would take a miraculous loss of form for Basford not to clinch the championship and second-placed Alvechurch to win practically all of their remaining eight games – starting tonight (Tuesday) at home to Carlton Town – but the carrot`s still there.
Despite fielding a slightly weakened side, Basford could well have won this on had it not been for an outstanding display by United `keeper Mike Emery. In the end, the Whites moved to within three points of the top six, thanks to a goal from Rob Norris in the 81st minute.
At the other end of the table, Romulus`s hopes of staying in the division received a massive boost with a 3-1 win at Coles Lane over a Newcastle Town side who are still not safe themselves.
It was goalless at the break and then Aaron Bott broke the deadlock to give Castle the lead on 51 minutes. The lead lasted barely four minutes though as Cameron Lee equalised and then Zak Lilly gave the hosts the lead on 67 minutes, with Lee`s second six minutes later, confirming the points.
The victory lifts Roms, for whom this was a first win in ten games, off the bottom of the table and two points in front of Market Drayton Town, who possess five games in hand.
Sheffield FC are eight points in front of the Shropshire side now after they earned a 1-1 draw at the Coach & Horses against Cleethorpes Town, who ended a run of three successive defeats. Brody Robertson broke the deadlock to give Clee a 53rd minute lead that Matt Roney cancelled out 12 minutes later.
