Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Curzon Ashton are mourning the loss of their former President and footballing legend Jack Crompton.

The Manchester United keeper, pictured, who played a key role in helping the Reds recover after the Munich air disaster passed away during the early hours of Thursday morning aged 91.

The First Division North club's Secretary Robert Hurst said: "Everybody connected with Curzon Ashton FC sends their deepest condolences to Jack's wife Sheila and all of their family. A true footballing gentleman."

Hulme-born Crompton made his United debut on January 5 1946 before lifting the FA Cup in 1948 and winning the league title in 1952. He became a coach at United after the Munich crash in 1958 and was part of the backroom team that guided the club to European Cup success in 1968.

After the Busby era came to an end, he left the club to take up the manager's job at Barrow, then the assistant's jobs at Bury and Preston - the latter under Bobby Charlton.

Crompton went on to coach United's reserves and continued to follow the Reds until his death. He was President at Curzon Ashton's Tameside Stadium for a number of years before he stepped down last year.
