Former Manchester United stars Phil Neville and Paul Scholes took temporary charge of Salford City on Saturday after the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Ammies parted company with manager Phil Power on Friday night.

Neville and Scholes, pictured, stepped in at Moor Lane on Saturday morning and along with their former Manchester United coach Mick Priestley, guided the club to a 2-1 victory over Kendal Town in First Division North.

Former Macclesfield Town forward Power, 47, also had a spell as FC United of Manchester’s assistant manager and led Salford to a 12th place finish in his first season in charge. He departed after 18 months at the helm, paying the price for just four wins in the club's last 11 outings.

In a statement released on Saturday morning, club officials said they were looking to take a 'new direction' and would announce their plans for the future in the coming days before thanking Power for his services.

The club said: "Salford City Football Club would like to announce that discussions between the owners of SCFC and the committee have led to the departure, with immediate effect, of team manager Phil Power.

"The committee and owners would like to thank Phil for all his hard work and commitment and wish him all the best for the future."

Power’s assistant, Dave Chadwick, also left the club and in a separate development, Anthony Johnson was being linked with taking a role at Moor Lane by his former employers at Ramsbottom United after he stood at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium on Friday night.
