New goalkeeper for Matlock as Cartwright makes transfer U-turn

Young goalkeeper Alex Akers has joined Matlock Town.

The former Nottingham Forest shot-stopper has recently spent time training with the club and has done enough to secure a permanent deal with the Gladiators.

Akers spent time in and around the U18s and U23s setup during his time with Forest.

"Alex's attitude is first rate, and we believe he has a raw potential we can develop further," Matlock boss Martin Carruthers said.

"We are excited to have him as part of our team. Between Saul [Deeney], Myles [Wright] and Alex, there is strong competition for that number one jersey."

Meanwhile, the club have also confirmed that midfielder Ethan Cartwright will not be linking up with the club, having previously been announced on Friday morning.

Later in the day, the club released a statement which read: "We can confirm that this evening we were notified by Ethan Cartwright that he has had a change of heart and no longer wishes to play for the club.

"We are all disappointed to hear this after Ethan had committed to the club. We wish Ethan all the best in his future endeavours."

The 22-year-old will instead remain with NWCFL side Irlam. He has played for the club since the end of a short stint with Basford United.
