This is the second lowest number of NPL clubs to progress this far in the FA Cup (six teams made it in 1981-82 when there was only one division), and the lowest for four years when nine clubs also did so.
Of those that have fallen by the wayside, Widnes were the first to go, way back in the Extra Preliminary Round, the only one of six NPL clubs who had to start this year’s competition at such an early stage not to win their tie against lower-league opposition. Their 1-0 replay defeat at Northwich Victoria means the Dragons are still yet to win a match in the FA Cup.
AFC Mansfield were the last of those six early starters to exit this year’s competition when they succumbed 2-1 at Kettering Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round. AFC Mansfield were the record 181st different opponent for Kettering Town in the FA Cup.
Two Premier League clubs had to begin their FA Cup campaign a round earlier than historically would have been the case. Hyde United were defeated by Division One West side Colne in the 1st Qualifying Round, whilst Bamber Bridge suffered their heaviest ever FA Cup defeat in their 2nd Qualifying Round replay at home to Cleethorpes Town.
Cleethorpes Town are one of only two Division One clubs still standing in the 3rd Qualifying Round after posting what was also their record FA Cup 5-0 win over Bamber Bridge in their 2nd Qualifying Round replay. The Owls are now appearing in the 3rd Qualifying Round for the first time in their history too, where they will host Guiseley from National League North.
The other Division One side, Kidsgrove Athletic, are just one round away from equalling their best FA Cup run but have to overcome Premier League opposition away from home in the shape of Workington if they are to do so.
Mickleover Sports are already equalling their best ever FA Cup run and they have a home tie against National League North Alfreton Town to try to create FA Cup history for the club.
Sports had never met a club beginning with the letter ‘A’ in the FA Cup before this season. Alfreton will be their second in successive rounds after defeating Anstey Nomads.
Hednesford Town will become the record 182nd different opponent for Kettering Town in FA Cup history whilst Marine have to travel to National League North outfit Brackley Town.
Also travelling to National League North opposition is Witton Albion who go to FC United of Manchester. The clubs met three years ago and Witton will be hoping that the charm of their 100th FA Cup campaign will help them avenge the 3-1 defeat from that day.
Gainsborough Trinity take on National League North outfit Blyth Spartans having beaten them on both previous occasions when they’ve met in the FA Cup.
Finally, Warrington Town will host a National League North club, too, when they face AFC Telford United for the first time.
