NPLFA: Matchday Three review

By David Watters

Goals, goals, goals... That's the only tagline on Matchday Three of the NPL Youth League as a total of 31 goals flew in across Wednesday's five fixtures involving the NPLFA's students.

The majority were scored at Kidsgrove Athletic who hosted Warrington Town in an eleven goal thriller at the Novus Stadium, seven of the goals in Staffordshire coming in the first half alone.

Javari Campbell got the proceedings underway with a quick-fire finish in the first minute. Euan Woods brought the visitors back into it and then put them ahead with two smart finishes in the 12th and 13th minute.

Bradley Allerton equalised five minutes later before Aron McGrath slotted away to give his side the lead again. Colby McQuillan gave the visitors a two goal advantage on 41 minutes but on the stroke of half-time Ryan Rowe scored from the spot to give his side hope for the second half.

The second half was all Kidsgrove and Jake Richings equalised for the hosts on 53 minutes before Rowe slotted his second penalty of the game to put Kidsgrove ahead. Further goals from Campbell and Richings secured their first points of the season for Kyle Adam's squad.

Matlock Town welcomed a Mossley side hoping to gain their first win of the season and they did in another high scoring clash at the Autoworld Arena.

It was the visitors who took the lead through Declan Lewis before a sweet strike from Ben Edgson in the 21st minute brought the scores level. Australian Stephen Travaglione then put the Gladiators ahead thanks to a fortunate goal in the 27th minute.

A brace from Prince Owusu in the 48th and 64th minute looked to have won the game for the Lillywhites but two late goals from substitute Luke Keen ensured the points stayed in Derbyshire after a topsy turvy encounter.

In the derby in Mickleover it was the apprentices against the masters as the younger Reds beat the older Blacks. Strikes from Dylan Garbett and Henry Besong after half-time winning the game for the Reds despite a late come back from the Blacks thanks to Junaid Ali Rafiq.

Belper Town's impressive and unbeaten start to the season continued with a fine defensive display at Radcliffe Borough.

A strike from Joel Cain in the first half and from Oliver Rathband in the second proved enough for the Banana Army to secure the points that keeps them second in the table.

Leaders Sutton Coldfield won their game convincingly against another side with a 100 per cent record in Leek Town.

The hosts were three up after 21 minutes thanks to Jordan Clement, Tom Riley and Yasin Peart. Josh Snape responded in the 25th minute to bring his side back into it but further goals from Peart and Riley as well as strikes from Hooper and Kohli put the result beyond doubt.

* The EVO-STIK NPL is the first league in English football to operate a youth league and academy combining football with further education.

Since being launched in September 2014 at five pilot clubs - Leek Town, Mickleover Sports, Newcastle Town, Radcliffe Borough and Romulus - the NPLFA has more than doubled in size.

Over the course of last season, seven more clubs - Belper Town, Kidsgrove Athletic, Lancaster City, Matlock Town, Mossley AFC, Sutton Coldfield Town, Warrington Town and Witton Albion - announced they were joining their ranks.

Launched with the backing of the Football Association to provide career pathways into the football industry, the NPLFA's 16 to 18-year-old students study on two year courses for Level 3 Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) qualifications while being trained on a daily basis by UEFA qualified coaches and competing in the NPL Youth League and national competitions like the FA Youth Cup.
