N/West round-up: Reds top at Christmas

By James Gordon

Workington will celebrate Christmas with a five point cushion at the top of the BetVictor Northern Premier N/West Division.

They made it 11 wins from 17 by dismantling bottom side Pickering Town 4-1.

The Pikes took a shock 14th minute lead through Jackson Jowett, though it was shortlived, Scott Allison’s penalty levelling things up four minutes later.

Allison would notch a hat-trick, but he had to wait until the 79th minute - and a second penalty - to get his and Workington’s second to give them the lead.

He added his third to claim the match ball three minutes later, and Dan Wordsworth made sure in stoppage time.

Workington’s nearest challengers Marine dropped points as they were held to a goalless draw on a first ever visit to Dunston, who are starting to climb the table having fallen several games behind.

Third-placed Ramsbottom United also dropped points, held to a 2-2 draw at Widnes.

Ruben Jerome gave the Rams a half-time lead, but two goals in three minutes early in the second half from James Steele and Ben Hodkinson put Widnes in front.

Josh Hmami’s third goal in two games rescued a point to leave Widnes still waiting for a win - they are now 11 without one in the league.

Craig Gott’s fourth minute goal was enough to earn Marske United a 1-0 away win at City of Liverpool to move them to fourth in the table, while Tadcaster Albion also moved in to the play-offs by beating rivals Trafford 2-1.

Darius Palma’s penalty had given the hosts the lead five minutes before the break, but Alfi Beestin and Donald Chimalilo gave Taddy a crucial away win.

Prescot Cables got out of jail at home to Kendal Town, Martyn Jackson’s 90th minute goal rescuing a point in a 1-1 draw.

Sean Paterson had given Kendal the lead on 43 minutes, and they looked set to claim their fourth win of the season until Jackson’s late show.

Jamie Rainford scored his first Mossley goal in decisive fashion as they beat Ossett United 3-2.

Tom Greaves gave Ossett a second minute lead, and they also led 2-1 through Marko Basic.

On both those occasions, Raheem Hanley brought the hosts level, before Rainford had the final say with just two minutes to play.

Elsewhere, Brighouse Town and Clitheroe exchanged goals in the first four minutes before Brighouse pulled clear to win 3-1 in the second half and Colne put their off-field troubles behind them with a 1-0 win at home to Droylsden.
