Rainworth Miners Welfare

Rainworth Miners Welfare have brought a new face into their squad for Saturday's Evo-Stik NPL Division One South visit to Northwich Victoria, writes Gordon Foster.

But manager Kevin Gee has also waved goodbye to another member of his team following Tuesday’s poor defensive display at home to Lincoln after cancelling Barry Payne's registration with immediate affect

Gee reacted quickly to the shock 3-4 defeat by bringing in experienced defender Ashley Kitchen from near neighbours Carlton Town, and the ex-Millers skipper will go straight into the squad for the game at Marston Road.

Gee is grateful to Carlton who agreed to waive the seven days notice of approach for Kitchen and is delighted with his new addition.

The manager said: "After Tuesday night's first half display, which was the worst since I’ve been at the club, it was clear that decisive action was taken. It wasn’t so much that we were 3-1 down at half time, since we had some poor performances last year, but more the fact that we now have a very good squad which is more than capable of matching teams in this division when it comes to the basic defensive principles.

"But concentration, work ethic and organisation just weren't there in the first half which is not acceptable, and it’s my job to do something about it. I’ve known Ashley for a long time. He joined us at Glapwell when he was first released by Mansfield Town five or six seasons ago so, I know what he brings to the table.

"He's a very good defender, has leadership qualities as he was of course captain at Carlton, he communicates and he's a winner. So I’m delighted that he has decided to join us."

Gee paid tribute to Payne and revealed that he's only let him go because he couldn't promise him a regular place in the side when he wants to play week in week out.

"I had a long chat with Barry over the weekend about the situation and it has now been mutually agreed that we cancel his form with us," said Gee.

"Baz is a top professional and a top bloke, but at 31 he needs to be playing now week in week out, and unfortunately I cannot guarantee that. Barry has been promised more football at another of our Evo-Stik neighbours so I’ve agreed to cancel his registration with immediate affect and wish him every success."

It is understood that Payne is now hoping to team up with his former Retford United manager Brett Marshall at Hucknall Town.
