Palmer, pictured at a meeting of the disabled supporters club at the Rams, was unveiled on Wednesday by the Nailers as the successor to Jimmy Albans following his departure from Christchurch Meadow a week ago.
The 53-year-old was appointed after stepping down as Long Eaton United manager, a post he'd held since 2013. Since retiring from the pro game in the 1990s after a spell at Walsall, Palmer has coached for Dean Thomas at Hinckley United and later joined Mickleover Sports as assistant to Dick Pratley.
Born in Aylesbury, he kicked off his career as an apprentice at Watford under Graham Taylor, playing in 18 matches for the Hornets, including four in the UEFA Cup.
In July 1984, he moved to Derby County where under the management of Arthur Cox, he was part of the team that won the Football League Second Division in season 1986–87.
Before the end of that season he moved to Hull City for a transfer fee of £30,000 and after a two year stay moved on to Notts County where he is perhaps best remembered for the winning goal against rivals Nottingham Forest in the local derby.
He will be assisted by Belper-born former defender Lee Barrow who kicked off his career as an apprentice at Notts County without breaking into the first team. Following a short spell with Scarborough, his career took off at Torquay United where he went on to make 164 appearances for the Devon club.
Barrow, who retired last year after turning out for Gresley, also includes Barry Town, Aberystwyth Town, Stafford Rangers. Hednesford Town, Leek Town, Rushall Olympic and Mickleover Sports among his former clubs.
Albans and his number two Wayne Hallcro left the Nailers last week after a run of six defeats in seven outings, a 4-2 reverse at Tividale triggering their departures.
Having been relegated from the EVO-STIK NPL's top flight last season, the defeat left the First Division South club struggling in 18th spot under the guidance of the former Grantham Town boss who was appointed in December 2014
