Premier Division Preview: South Shields host top two clash to highlight Non-League Day

By James Gordon

South Shields can take a huge step towards promotion to the National League North, as they welcome second placed Radcliffe to the North East.

The Mariners are currently 13 points clear of Radcliffe, although they have played a game more.

Last week, Kevin Phillips’ side ended their three-match winless run with victory over Hyde United. The Boro are unbeaten in their last three games, and won 2-0 last time out against Marske United.

That game could potentially give Hyde the chance to reclaim second place, as they head to Lancaster City.

The defeat against South Shields was Hyde’s second in a row, and they have only won one of their last four matches.

That is in contrast to the Dolly Blues, who have only lost one of their last six matches. They won 2-1 over Belper Town last time out.

Bamber Bridge will also be hoping to keep themselves in the top five, as they travel to relegation threatened Nantwich Town.

The Brig have won their last two games 2-1 against Stafford Rangers and Whitby Town. They are currently three points above Warrington Town, who are just outside the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Nantwich, despite being in the bottom four, have picked up a bit of form, winning their last two games against Gainsborough Trinity and Lancaster City. They are only a point off safety.

Gainsborough Trinity moved into the top five as a result of a midweek victory over Marine. They will be hoping to stay there with victory over Atherton Collieries.

They will hope to carry on their unbeaten run of eight games without defeat in their last nine. The only defeat was against Nantwich.

Meanwhile, Atherton will be hoping to bounce back after their recent defeat to Ashton United. They had won four out of seven prior to that.

Should the Holy Blues slip up at Atherton, then Warrington Town could sense a chance to pounce, as they face Liversedge at Cantilever Park. It is the first time in two weeks the Yellows will be in action, as they fell foul to the weather.

They will be hoping to extend an unbeaten run that goes all the way back to November. But, the Sedge will be hoping to preserve their own unbeaten run, as they are unbeaten in three, drawing two.

However, they may need to start turning those into wins, as they are seven points off safety. Although, they do have a couple of games in hand themselves.

Elsewhere, Marine will hope to close the gap to the play-offs themselves, as they travel to face Whitby Town. Both sides will be looking for a win, as they look for consistent form.

Meanwhile, Guiseley will be hoping to improve their form, as they welcome bottom of the league Belper Town to Nethermoor Park.

FC United of Manchester also host Marske United, Stafford Rangers welcome Morpeth Town and Stalybridge Celtic face Ashton United.
