Premier Division round-up: FC United falter as Trinity's momentum builds

By James Gordon

FC United of Manchester missed the chance to go five points clear at the top of the Northern Premier League on Tuesday night after losing 2-1 at Guiseley.

Goals from Danny Ellis and Jake Cassidy proved to be the undoing of Neil Reynolds’ side, with on-loan striker Joe Rodwell-Grant temporarily levelling the match midway through the second half.

Morpeth Town missed the chance to close the gap at the top, falling to a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Whitby Town.

A first-half penalty from Jake Day was enough for the Seasiders to pick up their third league win of the season and climb off the foot of the table.

Both those results played into the hands of South Shields, who rose to fourth after leaving it late to beat Liversedge 1-0.

Top scorer Michael Woods netted the winner 11 minutes from time as the Mariners returned to league action with a victory.

Warrington Town also jumped to fifth as Connor Woods’ second goal in as many matches helped them to a 1-0 win at Lancaster City.

Meanwhile, Bamber Bridge made it five league games without defeat as Connor Stanley’s deflected effort in first-half stoppage time was enough to see them past Hyde United.

Radcliffe missed the chance to jump up to second after they were pegged back late on away at Belper Town.

Luca Navarro’s had seemingly sent Boro on the way to maximum points, but Jacob Gratton rifled home his first for the Nailers deep in the second half to ensure the points were shared at the Raygar Stadium.

Eighth-placed Stafford Rangers also slipped up late on as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Ashton United.

Kaiman Anderson had given Rangers the lead at Hurst Cross, before Harry Coates scrambled the ball home for the hosts in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Meanwhile, Clayton Donaldson’s second brace in the space of four days ensured Gainsborough Trinity ran out 3-0 winners at Marske United.

His quickfire double had Trinity on course for victory, before Liam Waldock added gloss to the scoreline late on as his side made it seven matches unbeaten in the league.

The night’s other two fixture - Stalybridge Celtic’s clash with Marine and Atherton Collieries’ trip to Warrington Rylands - both ended goalless.
