Premier Division round up: Liversedge boost survival hopes as Yellows pull off stunning win

By James Gordon

South Shields hammered home their title credentials with an emphatic 4-0 victory at Marske United on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Darius Osei, Mackenzie Heaney (2) and Blair Adams helped the Mariners retain their nine-point cushion at the top of the Northern Premier League table.

Their two nearest challengers also picked up three points, with Hyde United and Warrington Town earning 1-0 wins against Nantwich Town and Bamber Bridge respectively.

Edy Maieco struck 20 minutes from time for the Tigers as they ensured Paul Carden’s Dabbers reign got off to a losing start.

Carden’s former club picked up an unlikely victory against fellow promotion challengers Bamber Bridge, having played most of the game with 10 men following Sean Williams’ red card inside the opening 30 seconds.

Still, they produced an impressive display on home soil as Bohan Dixon’s second half effort stretched their unbeaten league run to 16 matches.

Fourth-placed Radcliffe lost ground on the top three as they were held to a goalless draw at Whitby Town.

Elsewhere, Gainsborough Trinity boosted their chances of a top five finish as Liam Waldock’s goal helped them to all three points away at Guiseley.

Marine, another of the teams firmly in the mix, were 1-0 winners at Atherton Collieries, but there was no such luck for Matlock Town as they let slip a first half lead and were forced to settle for a point at home to Ashton United.

FC United of Manchester suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat at the hands of relegation-threatened Liversedge.

Sedge raced into a 3-0 lead inside 32 minutes thanks to Jack Carr, Kurt Harris and Ben Atkinson, and although FC United pulled two goals back, they were unable to find an equaliser at Broadhurst Park.

At the Giant Axe, Lancaster City recorded their third win in a row after downing Morpeth Town 2-1.

Goals from David Norris and Nic Evangelinos proved to be enough for the Dolly Blues, with Matty Cornish pulling one back for the Highwaymen 25 minutes from time.

In the day’s other action, Warrington Rylands mounted a late comeback to rescue a 2-2 draw at Stafford Rangers.

Having trailed 2-0, Rylands capitalised on their hosts being reduced to 10 men as Osebi Abadaki pulled a goal back on debut before Sean Cooke equalised with a stunning free-kick in the final minute of regular time.

Finally, Stalybridge Celtic came from behind to beat Belper Town 2-1 and move six points clear of the drop zone.

Basement side Belper hit the front on 76 minutes thanks to Jerome Greaves, but Celtic turned things around in the closing stages as Ethan Padden headed them level before Chris Dagnall scored the winner in second half stoppage time.
