Premier Division Round-up: Shields shocked by Warrington Town, Gainsborough held to a draw

By James Gordon

Warrington Town returned to winning ways and climbed back to fifth in the league following an enthralling 3-2 victory over South Shields at Cantilever Park on Saturday.

Despite an early opener from Darius Osei, the Yellows responded well, as goals from Stefan Mols, Matthew McDonald and Sean Williams were enough to secure the win.

The win for Mark Beesley’s outfit marked their second triumph over the Mariners this season, and their first three points in the league since their 3-1 victory over Guiseley at the beginning of the month.

Elsewhere, the league leaders Gainsborough Trinity were held to a 2-2 draw at the Northolme against sixth-placed Radcliffe.

Clayton Donaldson’s late strike for Trinity was enough to claim a point on home turf, and continued their seven-game unbeaten streak in the Premier Division.

Bamber Bridge bounced back from their defeat last week to Shields with a 5-1 win over Matlock Town at home.

Both Harry Scarborough and Donovan Lescott found the net twice in front of the home fans, which saw Brig move five points from the top after 21 games.

In other results, Hyde United stumbled to a 0-0 draw at Marine.

The outcome means the Tigers have now failed to win their last three league games, despite sitting in third, two points behind Trinity.

Warrington Rylands closed the gap on the playoff places as a second-half brace from Kelly N'Mai helped Jody Banim’s side to a 2-1 victory over Stalybridge Celtic.

A sending off for Kyle Harrison did the hosts no favours as they remain in a relegation position ahead of their trip to Warrington Town next weekend.

Meanwhile, a first-half goal from Alex Kiwomya led Stafford Rangers to a well-fought 1-0 win over FC United of Manchester.

The result saw Rangers climb above FC United in the table into 10th - two points clear of Neil Reynolds’ side.

Meanwhile, Ashton United fell short at the death, as a late winner from substitute Bradley Carroll guided Lancaster City to a 1-0 win in front of the home fans.

It marked the Dolly Blues’ fourth consecutive league win - their best run of form all season.

Jonathan Rimmington’s Liversedge side returned to winning ways on Saturday, after Joe Walton’s strikes secured a 2-1 victory over Guiseley.

The Lions have struggled of late and are yet to win a league game since mid October.

In other games, Belper Town put an end to their poor league form after a comfortable 2-0 win over Morpeth Town.

Second half goals from Ethan Cartwright and Shaun Tuton secured the points for the Nailers on the road.

Whitby Town moved out of the relegation position following their 1-0 win over Atherton Collieries on home turf.

Debutant Connor Simpson made his first start for the Seasiders, but it was his teammate Bradley Fewster who got the goal late in the second half.

And finally, the game between Nantwich Town and Marske United was Postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and will be played at a later date.
