Premier Division Round-up: Table shifts as Buxton take the top spot

By James Gordon

In a weekend plagued by weather woes due to Storm Eunice leaving only three games to be played, it was Buxton who would leapfrog to the top of the table with a 1-0 victory against Gainsborough Trinity.

Derbyshire would not be spared from the freak weather conditions however, the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium was covered in a thick sheet of snow prior to the encounter.

Despite this, many volunteers and staff came together to clear the snow and ensure that the game could continue.

In front of a crowd of 506, the Bucks made an impressive start to the game, but managed to find that all important goal on the 29th minute mark thanks to Jason Gilchrist converting a cross by Warren Clarke.

The conditions improved significantly in the second half and Buxton were able to see out the game with a 1-0 victory.

Speaking post-match following his team's win, Buxton manager Steve Cunningham was pleased with the way his team performed, but warned that they must take their chances more when in front of the goal: “We started off like a trooper today. I think that was some of the best football the club has ever seen in the first-half; the give-and-go’s, the 1-2’s, that’s what we work on in training.

“We opened them up but we should have been 3-0 up after 10 minutes, but that’s us all over, we just don’t take our chances.

“Sooner or later someone is going to get a good kick in [another opposition team], we are just getting that frustrated by not being able to put our games to bed, our performance [against Gainsborough] deserves that.”

Elsewhere, FC United were held to a 2-2 draw away to fourth placed Scarborough.

FC United made a blitzing start with Luke Griffiths finding the net after just two minutes, before a Michael Coulson penalty tied the game up six minutes before the interval.

The Seadogs would respond instantly after the break thanks to a goal from Kieran Lynn but the visitors would not give up that easily, and Regan Linney was on the mark to find his ninth goal of the season 15 minutes before the end.

The result leaves FC United two points adrift off of a play-off position behind Warrington Town, meanwhile Scarborough remain six points in front of their opponents.

The final game of the weekend saw Morpeth host Hyde who will have been bolstered by their previous 2-1 win against Warrington Town.

Two goals on the stroke of each half would give Hyde a point against Morpeth, who scored two quick-fire goals in the 63rd and 65th minute to take the lead, before a very late Thomas Pratt goal would equalise the scoreline.

The result leaves Hyde in 19th, three points above Nantwich Town whereas Morpeth remain in 10th place.
