Premier Round-Up: Basford take second spot

By James Gordon

South Shields, Lancaster City and FC United of Manchester all dropped points this weekend as Basford United took second spot in the BetVictor Northern Premier Division.

Steve Chettle’s side claimed 1 -0 victory over Morpeth, as James Reid bagged the only goal of the afternoon in the 32nd minute.

“It was hard fought,” Chettle told BasfordTV.

“It wasn’t pretty and we were hanging on at times. A great piece of quality from James Reid has won us the game.

“Like I said before the game, these are a dangerous proposition, Morpeth. They’re a good football team with good players and they proved that fact. We were hanging on but I’m delighted with the 1-0 win.

“We said as soon as the ball went down for the free kick, I fancy something Reid to go something special here and he proved that. It was fantastic.”

Despite their defeat, South Shields remain at the top of the table ahead by three points to Basford.

The Mariners had won their last four league matches heading into the weekend, including a 2-1 victory over Lancaster, but two late goals from Witton Albion saw a 2-1 upset in the division.

Sefton Gonzales scored in the 45th minute to give the home side a lead, but a goal from Michael Monaghan in the 90th minute levelled the scores before Kyle Sambor scored in injury time.

FC United of Manchester went up one spot to third place following a 2-2 draw away to Buxton. Diego DeGirolamo twice gave Buxton the lead, but Regan Linney and Paul Ennis levelled the scores at full time.

Lancaster City suffered their second consecutive loss, losing 1-0 to Ashton United who jumped up to 18th place in the table.

Bohan Dixon came off the bench to score a late winner as Warrington Town beat Whitby Town 2-1, and the Yellows remain fifth.

Just outside of the play-offs, Nantwich Town defeated Stalybridge Celtic 2-0 with goals from Joe Mwasile and James Lawrie inside the first half.

Nicky Walker scored a hat-trick as Gainsborough Trinity continued their fine form with a 3-1 victory over Atherton Collieries, while Stafford Rangers defeated Scarborough Athletic 1-0.

Radcliffe are now six without a win as they fell 2-1 to Bamber Bridge, who sit 13th in the table.

Finally, Hyde United defeated Grantham Town 3-0 with goals from Tom Pratt, Liam Tongue and Chris Sharp.
