Premier Round-up: Scarborough go six points clear

By James Gordon

Scarborough Athletic moved six points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division table on Saturday after hammering Lancaster City 6-0 on their own Giant Axe patch.

A bad day for new City boss Mark Fell started in the 31st minute when a poor own goal following a mix-up between full-back Lewis Fensome and 'keeper Jack Sims seemed to have a morale-sapping affect.

Bailey Gooda and a Michael Coulson penalty stretched Boro's lead to 3-0 at the break.

James Walshaw made it 4-0 on 55 minutes and, after an 86th minute dismissal of City's Charlie Russell, the visitors added two more late on from Nathan Valentine and Jack Johnson.

Basford United moved above Warrington Town, who were on Emirates FA Cup duty, and into second spot after a 4-0 win at Irongate against a Bamber Bridge side still mourning the departure of manager Neil Reynolds to Vanarama National League North side FC United of Manchester.

Nathan Watson on 28 minutes and Jack Thomas 10 minutes later gave Martin Carruthers' side a 2-0 interval lead.

Four minutes after the break, Courey Grantham added Basford's third and Matt Thornhill made it 4-0 with 7 minutes to go.

Nantwich Town had the opportunity to move level on points with Basford had they won at the Weaver Stadium against second-bottom Workington AFC.

But the Reds frustrated the Dabbers, who had several decent chances, and the game ended goalless.

South Shields went into their game at Mariners Park against Gainsborough Trinity with just one win in seven games.

But a David Foley effort in first half injury-time ended a run of two successive defeats in front of a crowd of 1,163.

Shields are back up to sixth in the table, level on points with Farsley Celtic, who drew 2-2 at Bower Fold against Stalybridge Celtic.

Will Hayhurst put the Yorkshire Celts in front after 19 minutes.

Ross Dent equalised 5 minutes before half-time, only for Jimmy Spencer to restore the visitors' lead 9 minutes after the restart.

But a second from Dent 10 minutes later eventually saw the spoils shared.

Bottom side North Ferriby United's caretaker-management team started with only the Villagers' seventh point of the campaign to date after a good 2-2 draw at Silverlands against eighth-placed Buxton.

And they twice came from a goal behind, firstly through Luke Hinsley in the 67th minute after Tolani Omotola's 17th minute opener for the Bucks.

And then through Luke Lofts in the 77th minute after Liam Hardy had restored the home side's lead from the penalty spot 3 minutes earlier.

Dan Sweeney will have mixed feelings tonight.

Joy after netting a hat-trick for Hednesford Town at Matlock Town.

But disappointment in that it was only good enough to earn an away point!

Two Sweeney penalties with a spot-kick reply from Craig Westcarr sent the Pitmen into the break 2-1 up.

Sweeney then completed his hat-trick just 2 minutes after the interval, but Jamie Jackson just past the hour-mark and Westcarr again 8 minutes later earned the Gladiators a point.

Whitby Town enjoyed a good 4-0 win at the Turnbull Ground against Mickleover Sports.

Dale Hopson's 8th minute strike was all that separated the teams at half-time.

But a second for Hopson on 68 minutes and then Dan McWilliams after 84 minutes and Jassem Sukar 3 minutes later, took the game well away from the Derbyshire visitors.

The action in the game at Stafford Rangers' Marston Road came late on.

After an uneventful first half, defender John McCombe broke the deadlock to give visiting Hyde United a 72nd minute lead.

Connor Simpson made it 2-0 just 9 minutes later, but Dan Burns gave Rangers a sniff when he pulled one back with 4 minutes remaining.

But Tom Pratt made it 3-1 to win it for the Tigers in stoppage time.
