Premier round-up: Whitby hit the top

By James Gordon

Whitby Town are the new leaders of the BetVictor Northern Premier after beating Hyde United 2-0.

Goals from Dale Hopson and Bradley Fewster in the final quarter knocked the Tigers off the top spot, as Whitby won their fifth game out of seven.

Basford United are second after they came from behind to win 3-1 at Bamber Bridge.

Brig led through Michael Fowler’s first half goal, but Basford turned things around through Liam Hearn and Nat Watson, before Courey Grantham added gloss in injury time.

Matlock Town suffered their first defeat of the season as they went down 2-1 at home to South Shields.

After a goalless first half, Jon Shaw fired Shields in front a minute after the restart and a Robert Briggs penalty doubled their lead, meaning Marcus Marshall’s 75th minute strike proved just consolation.

The Gladiators slip to fifth, below Warrington Town, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Radcliffe.

Tyrese Sinclair gave winless Radcliffe a first half lead, but Tony Gray swept home on the hour to share the spoils.

Ashton United registered their first win of the season, beating Mickleover Sports 1-0.

Aaron Smith’s goal on six minutes was enough to relieve some pressure on the relegated Robins.

Stafford Rangers remain winless, though did pick up a point in a goalless draw at home to FC United, while Buxton’s poor start to the season continued as they were beaten 2-1 at Morpeth.

Joe Walton scored twice in seven minutes, including one from the penalty spot, which means the Bucks are winless from their eight games so far.

Morpeth Town assistant manager Craig Lynch hailed his side's patience as they found a way through against Buxton.

He said: “We had to be patient and bide our time, but we kept at it and we got what we deserved which was the three points.

"Buxton are a good side but we stuck at and got our rewards."

Scarborough squandered a two goal lead at Nantwich Town, going down 3-2, as they remain in the lower reaches of the table.

Two goals in a minute after a quarter of an hour from Luke Lofts and James Walshaw seemingly put the Seadogs in control.

But as they tired late on, the Dabbers struck - Josh Langley pulling one back on 76, before goals from Joe Malkin and Casper Hughes all within five minutes completed a fine comeback.

Gainsborough Trinity fell to their fourth defeat of the season, Liam Goulding’s strike on the 77th minute proving enough for Witton Albion, who are nicely poised in the top half of the table with a game in hand on most.

The game of the weekend came at the Giant Axe, where Lancaster City and Grantham Town shared six goals.

Craig Westcarr bagged a brace for the Gingerbreads, and Paul Dawson did the same for the hosts.

Dawson’s second, which came after Westcarr’s second had cancelled out Matty Blinkhorn’s goal, gave the Dolly Blues a 3-2 lead, before Rodrigo Goncalves scored an 80th minute equaliser.

Atherton Collieries continued their encouraging start to life in the Premier Division, first half goals from Tom Bentham and Brad Lynch firing them past Stalybridge Celtic, despite Scott Bakkor’s second half strike.
