Premier Round-up: Yellows pull clear

By James Gordon

Warrington Town pulled four points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK League Premier Division on Saturday.

The Yellows were 4-1 winners at Mickleover Sports, while nearest rivals Farsley Celtic fell to defeat at Lancaster City and South Shields were held at home by Buxton.

It was a routine victory for Paul Carden’s men, who took the lead inside four minutes thanks to Tony Gray’s volley.

Dylan Vassallo made it two before the break and although Evan Garnett pulled one back, a penalty three minutes later by Jack Mackreth was followed by a fine low drive by Robbie Evans.

Farsley slipped to their second defeat in three games as they went down 2-0 at the Giant Axe.

Charlie Bailey and Matthew Blinkhorn scored second half goals to lift the Dolly Blues up to 14th in the table and hit the 40 point mark.

South Shields are now eight points behind Warrington after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Buxton.

Having won their first 13 home games of the season, Shields have now failed to win any of their last three at home.

Lee Mason gave them a 12th minute lead which was cancelled out eight minutes later by Nico De Girolamo, as the Bucks claimed a valuable point for their play-off push.

Moving level on points with South Shields are Nantwich Town, who eventually prevailed 4-2 at home to Stalybridge Celtic.

They trailed at half time to Neil Kengni’s 43rd minute strike, but two goals in two minutes from Toby Mullarkey and Joe Malkin put the Dabbers in front.

Former Premier League striker Ricardo Fuller grabbed his first goal for the club on 70 minutes, and though Daniel Cockerline threatened a Celtic comeback, Malkin’s second made sure.

Gainsborough Trinity now have a four point cushion in the final play-off spot after registering their third straight win under interim boss Liam King.

Goals either side of half-time from Nathan Stainfield and Simon Russell - voted LiveLend Goal of the Week - helped them to a 2-1 win over Bamber Bridge.

Hednesford Town recorded their third straight win to ease their relegation worries, beating Grantham Town 2-1.

Jack Hallahan and Courey Grantham scored first half goals to lift the Pitmen up to 13th in the table.

Workington are now six points adrift of safety after falling to a second home defeat in a week, losing 2-1 at home to Hyde United.

They led through Joshua Calvert on 33 minutes but the Tigers turned it around before the break through Paddy Lane and Nick Platt’s penalty in first half stoppage time.

Witton Albion continued their fine form with a late comeback to beat Scarborough Athletic 2-1.

James Walshaw had given the Seadogs a first half lead as they looked for a win to keep up the pressure on the play-off places, but they crumbled late on to goals from James Foley and Daniel McKenna.

Elsewhere, Whitby Town came from behind to beat Basford United 4-1 and Matlock Town beat bottom side North Ferriby United 1-0.

Stafford Rangers edged a point further clear of the drop zone with a goalless draw at home to Marine.
