Halesowen Town made international headlines and helped raise more than £10,000 for research into Leukaemia when they hosted an Aston Villa charity match.

More than 2,500 fans were at the Evo-Stik NPL First Division South club last Sunday as the Yeltz staged a charity match between a Stan Petrov XI and Aston Villa’s Lions Legends, pictured.

Villa's captain Petrov is battling the disease and the Yeltz say there were honoured to host the event and give the Premier League club’s supporters a chance to show their support for their skipper.

Villa favourites including Ian Taylor, Lee Hendrie, Ken McNaught and Gordon Cowans all played while the Bulgarian international’s former teammates Gareth Barry and Ashley Young also saw the match from the comfort of the director’s box.

Bulgarian TV was at The Grove to film the clash which also featured on FIFA’s website and on site's around the world including Scotland, Ireland and Australia.

A Yeltz spokesman said: "We were very pleased that Stan Petrov was well enough to come himself and our sincere and good wishes go to him as he continues his recovery. We wish to thank all our officials and supporters who contributed to the success of Sunday's match, both prior to and on the day.

"We’d particularly like to thank ‘Ryno’ Robinson-Little who was instrumental in arranging for the match to take place at The Grove."
