Red Smith turns to chess

Workington defender Sam Smith has given an insight to his life during the coronavirus lockdown.

Smith, 26, has just finished his seventh season of first team football with the Reds and is just shy of 200 appearances.

In the wake of COVID-19, he was asked by the club’s official website what life has been like since the season was ended.

He said: “Not too bad so far, Geoff (dad) and Judith (mum) are doing a good job keeping me and I’m well fed but not sure they’re helping with my sanity.

“I’m working from home for the foreseeable future but keep in regular contact with the lads as we do our ‘team-bonding’ bit.

“Goose has often told me about his chess prowess so I bought a board the other day and intend to dethrone him when life returns to normal!

“I’ve been pushing myself on the runs and hope to do a half marathon in the near future.”

Workington were flying at the top of the N/West Division when the season was suspended, sitting 10 points clear of nearest rivals Ramsbottom United - albeit Rammy had three games in hand.

The Reds were on a run of 10 successive wins in all competitions, last tasting defeat against Ramsbottom back at the end of January.
